All living beings in this world are born within the vastness of nature, where no tail or end can be seen.
Some live in abundance, blessed with favorable conditions, thriving without want.
Others are cast into barren wildernesses, enduring harsh lives—bent, broken, and scarred.
The world I pursue belongs to the latter.
At some point in my life, I developed a deep affection for those resilient lives surviving in the wilderness.
I began observing them closely, drawn to their silent strength.
I no longer have interest in lives that grow idle amidst abundance.
In that sense, the deserts of California became the perfect subject for my artistic world.
The lone sycamore trees scattered endlessly across the unfamiliar landscapes, the withered and dried blades of grass—all became infinite sources of inspiration for my work.
The relentless winds that torment these lives, the vivid colors of wildflowers blooming in the desert, the sun that is at times warm and at other times fierce—all these elements reflect facets of my own life.
Though I am merely a small part of nature, in the richness of spirit that comes from seeing nature as my everything, I continue to express my inner world on canvas.
It has been well over 20 years since I began painting while living immersed in the nature of Wrightwood.
There have been many painful and difficult memories along the way, but I believe I was able to endure because of the support of many people.
I chose the theme of this series as “My Forest” because I have become deeply familiar with nature through years of breathing and living with it.
The works follow traditional Korean landscape painting techniques, expressed in my own colors.
I traveled throughout California, capturing the gentle, quiet warmth that nature offers.
Through my paintings, I hope viewers can carry lasting impressions and inspiration.
Going forward, I hope to become someone who resembles the great nature itself.

이 세상에 존재하는 모든 생명체는 꼬리가 보이지 않는 대자연 속에서 태어 납니다.
어떤 생명체는 풍요롭고 부러울것 없는 좋은 여건 속에서 존재하여 풍요 속에서 살아가고 또 어떤 생명체는 아무도 없는 황야와 같은 벌판에 던져져서 잘리고 휘어지고 패인 모진 삶을 살아갑니다. 내가 추구하는 세계는 후자에 속하는 것입니다.
나는 언제부터인가 광야에서 어려움을 견디며 살아가는 모진 생명에 대하여 한없는 애착을 가지고 그들을 살피기 시작했습니다.
나는 더 이상 풍요 속에서 나태한 생명들에는 관심이 없기 때문입니다.
그런 점에서 California 사막은 내 그림 세계에 아주 적합한 대상이 되었습니다.
고국과는 또 다른 모습으로 끝없이 널려있는 거는 한포기의 Sycamore tree와 바짝 말라 버리고 메마른 풀잎들의 생명체는 무한한 내그림의 소재가 되었습니다. 그 생명들을 괴롭히며 떠도는 무한정의 바람, 그리고 사막에서 피어나는 야생화들의 야햔 색깔, 때로는 따사하고 때로는 강렬한 태양, 이런 것들에서 새삼 내 인생의 한 단면을 봅니다.
나는 자연의 한 일부에 지나지 않지만, 자연이 나의 전부라는 마음의 풍요속에 나의 내면의 세계를 화폭에 담아갈 것입니다.
이곳 Wrightwood 자연에 묻혀서 생활하며 그림을 그린 지도 20년이 훌쩍 넘었습니다.
그간 힘들고 아픈 추억도 많았지만 많은 이들의 도움이 있었기에 자연에 묻혀서 버티어 왔다고 생각합니다.
이번 작품의 전체적인 주제를 “My Forest” 라고 한 것은 제가 그동안 자연과 호흡하며 친밀해졌기 때문입니다. 작품은 전통 산수화 기법을 따랐으며 나만의 색채로 표현 하였습니다.
California 여러 곳을 두루 다니며 자연이 보여주는 고요하고 따스한 모습들을 그렸습니다.
나의 작품을 통하여 이들이 어떤 영감과 인상을 오랫동안 간직 하였으면 하는 바램입니다.
앞으로는 대자연을 닮은 내가 되었으면 합니다.
